Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans opsit.
Etymology: < Afrikaans opsit < South African Dutch opzit < Dutch opzitten to sit up < op- up- prefix + zitten sit v.The custom was practised in the province of North-Holland in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, and was current in South Africa well into the 20th cent.
South African. Now historical.
intransitive. Of a couple: to sit up together at night as a recognized part of courtship (cf. to sit up at sit v. Phrasal verbs 1).An Afrikaner (originally Dutch) courtship custom. The couple would sit by candlelight, for a period determined by the length of the candle provided by the courted woman's family.
