Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin oppīlātiōn-, oppīlātiō.
Etymology: < classical Latin oppīlātiōn-, oppīlātiō the action of stopping up < oppīlāt- , past participial stem of oppīlāre oppilate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French, French opilation (1328), Italian oppilazione (1313). Compare slightly later oppilate v., oppilate adj. N.E.D. (1903) gives the pronunciation as (ǫpilēi·ʃən) /ɒpɪˈleɪʃən/.
