Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin onopordon.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin onopordon cotton thistle (alternative reading in early editions of Pliny (compare quot. 1601) for onopradon ) < ancient Greek ὀνόπορδον < ὄνος ass (see onocentaur n.) + πορδή breaking wind < πέρδεσθαι to break wind (see fart v.). Compare Middle French Onopordos (1562 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny: compare quot. 1601).The plant is said to cause flatulence in asses (see quot. 1601). In the 18th cent. Onopordon was adopted in scientific Latin as a genus name, though the form Onopordum is now considered to have priority (see Onopordum n.).
