Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese nashiji.
Etymology: < Japanese nashiji pear texture (10th cent. as nashidi ; 1603 as naxigi in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < nashi pear (see nashi n.) + ji earth, ground, background, texture ( < Middle Chinese).Gold or silver dust is used in the decoration as well as in the background to imitate the skin of a pear. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the pronunciation as (năʃī·dʒi) /nəˈʃiːdʒɪ/.
A Japanese lacquer containing gold or silver flakes. Also: the technique of decorating with this lacquer.
