Etymology: < ancient Greek ὠμος raw (see omophagia n.) + -phagy comb. form, after French omophagie the practice of eating raw flesh (1732 as plural with reference to feasts of Bacchus, early 19th cent. as singular) or Hellenistic Greek ὠμοϕαγία omophagia n. Compare earlier omophagia n.

The practice of eating raw flesh, esp. as part of a bacchanalian or other religious rite (cf. quot. 1706 at omophagia n.).
