Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin catholicus; Greek καθολικός.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin catholicus, katholicus, katholicos (12th cent.), and its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek καθολικός (6th cent.), use as noun of masculine of ancient Greek καθολικός general, universal (see catholic adj. and compare 2 at that entry).In quot. 1481 via Old French. In the form Catholicon after the Greek accusative singular καθολικόν; the plural Catholicoi reflects the Greek nominative plural. The first separate Eastern churches formed in the 5th cent., when Greek was the main ecclesiastical language in south-eastern Europe and western Asia. Compare ( < Greek) Armenian kat‘ołikos and Syriac qatōlīqā (also qatōlīqō).
The primate (primate n.1 1a) of any of various Eastern churches, esp. the Armenian Church or the Nestorian Church.
