2. A kind of boisterous dance known in mid 17th cent. England, and perhaps identical with the cushion-dance (cushion-dance n.) or trenchmore (trenchmore n.). Obsolete.Perhaps an isolated application of sense B.; this is suggested by the form of words in quot. a1652, while the use of omnium gatherum in quot. 1689, in which it is preceded by the names of two dances but followed by two adverbs meaning ‘promiscuously’, ‘indiscriminately’, is as likely to be adverbial as substantival.
