Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian okrug.
Etymology: < Russian okrug circuit, administrative district (18th cent. or earlier; earlier in Old Russian in sense ‘circle, surroundings’, and as okruga in administrative sense) < o-, prefix meaning ‘around’ + krug circle. Compare Bulgarian okrăg, Serbian okrug, and similar forms in many Slavonic languages.
In Russia and certain other countries of Eastern Europe: an administrative district or territory; spec. (in the Soviet Union and some countries formerly part of the Soviet Union) a low-level administrative division, smaller than an oblast (often a national or autonomous one for a small ethnic group).
