Etymology: Irregularly < post-classical Latin holorum (1526 in the passage translated in quot. c1540), genitive plural of holor swan, variant of classical Latin olor < the same Indo-European base as Welsh alarch , Early Irish ela (Irish eala ). Compare olorina n.The grass of Loch Spiney, referred to by Boece and Leslie, is apparently floating sweet-grass, Glyceria fluitans, called locally ‘swan-girss’:1897 C. J. G. Rampini Hist. Moray & Nairn ii. 58 Majestic swans..fed upon the ‘swan-girss’ that grew by its [sc. Loch Spiney's] shores. Boece's Holorum was perhaps short for a phrase such as herba holorum ‘swans' grass’.
