Etymology: < Latin concuss-, participial stem of concutĕre to dash together, shake violently; in the jurists ‘to terrify by threats in order to extort money’; < con- + quatĕre to shake, strike, dash, etc. Compare Italian concussare (of frequentative form) to shake.
