Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin oleum , -o- connective.
Etymology: < classical Latin oleum oil (see oleum n.) + -o- connective. Compare post-classical Latin oleo- (in oleomella , oleoselinon (a636 in Isidore)), perhaps continuing in later use: compare oleosaccharum n.Earliest in formations dating from the mid 19th cent., such as oleophosphoric adj., oleometer n., oleoresinous adj., and oleoresin n. Formations appear in French at a similar time (compare oléomètre oleometer n.), and slightly later in other Romance languages (compare Italian oleometro (1869), Spanish oleofosfórico (1882)).
