Etymology: < post-classical Latin superius (1519 or earlier), specific sense of classical Latin superius, noun (see superior n.). Compare earlier altus n.
Early Music.
In choral music: the highest voice part in an ensemble, a cantus. Also: a person who sings this part. Cf. soprano n. 1a.

1653 Ld. Brouncker tr. R. Descartes Excellent Compend. Musick 52 Superius is the most Acute voice, and is opposed to Bassus, so that by contrary motions they frequently occur to each other.
