Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese omi.
Etymology: < Japanese omi clan chieftain (720 in Nihon-shoki, the Chronicles of Japan), fused compound of uncertain origin. Probably a contraction of ō-mi ( < ō- great: see oban n.) + mi- revered being, god (see miko n.), but frequently apprehended as < ō- + mi body, person. Compare o-omi n.
Now historical.
In early imperial Japan: (a hereditary title for) the head of clan or family that claimed imperial ancestry, who usually also served as a high-ranking official in the Yamato court. Also: an official title for the leader of such a clan. Cf. muraji n., o-muraji n., o-omi n.
