Etymology: < Anglo-Norman per or its etymon classical Latin per by (see per prep.) + hap n.1, after peradventure adv., percase adv., perchance adv. Compare earlier by hap , in hap (see hap n.1 Phrases 1a), uphap adv., and slightly later perhaps adv.Earlier currency of the word is implied by the following occurrence as a borrowing into Middle Cornish:?a1450 (?1350–75) Origo Mundi l. 1352 in E.
