单词 omer
释义

omern.

Brit. /ˈəʊmə/, U.S. /ˈoʊmər/
Forms: 1500s– omer, 1600s–1700s homer, 1900s– 'omer. Also (esp. in sense 2) with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew ʿōmer.
Etymology: < Hebrew ʿōmer sheaf.First adopted in the biblical text in the Geneva Bible (1560), replacing earlier gomer n.1
1. In ancient Israel: a dry measure equal to a tenth of an ephah (about 2.3 litres, 5 pints). Also: a pot or vessel holding such a measure. Cf. the earlier form gomer n.1In English writing, the omer is usually associated with manna, after the Biblical passages (Exodus 16:16, 18) in which the Hebrew word ʿōmer is used for both the amount of manna measured and the vessel used to measure it. The omer is occasionally confused with a larger Hebrew measure, the homer (homer n.1); hence the form Homer in quot. 1706.
