Etymology: < post-classical Latin obdormition-, obdormitio the state of being or falling asleep (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine) < classical Latin obdormīt- , past participial stem of obdormīre to fall asleep ( < ob- ob- prefix + dormīre to sleep: see dormition n.) + -iō -ion suffix1; compare -ition suffix.
