Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese ōban.
Etymology: < Japanese ōban, lit. ‘big size’ (earlier as ohoban ) < ō- great (earlier as oho- , ofo- ) + -ban size, format, also used to denote a monetary unit, combining form of han differentiation, distinguishing mark, seal, size < Middle Chinese. In quot. 1662 via French Oeban (1659 in the passage translated, 1868 in Littré as oban ). Compare kobang n. N.E.D. (1902) enters this under obang and gives the pronunciation as (ōu·bæŋ) /ˈəʊbæŋ/.
Now chiefly historical.
An oblong gold coin with rounded corners, formerly current in Japan and now used on special occasions in offerings or gifts; the sum of money represented by this, equal to ten kobangs. Cf. kobang n.Obans were issued from the late 16th to the mid 19th cent.
