Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: oat n., cell n.1
Etymology: < oat n. + cell n.1, so called from its histological appearance.
1. Pathology. A small oval cell with a darkly staining nucleus and scanty cytoplasm, thought to resemble an oat grain, characteristic of small cell carcinoma of the lung. Frequently attributive, esp. in oat cell carcinoma.
