Etymology: < star n.1 + wort n.1Specific senses. With uses in senses 1 and 4 compare post-classical Latin stellaria (also in scientific Latin as a genus name): see Stellaria n. With use in sense 1 also compare early modern Dutch sterrecruyt (1554 in Dodoens), Middle Low German stērnekrūt , German Sternkraut (15th cent.). In sense 3 after scientific Latin asteris, specific name (1775); the moth is so called on account of the plant on which it feeds (see sense 1). Specific forms. In β. forms probably after Dutch sterre-, combining form of ster star n.1
1. Any of numerous herbaceous plants of the genus Aster or the cosmopolitan family Asteraceae having stellate flowers of various colours, often yellow. Frequently with distinguishing word, as summer starwort, yellow starwort, etc. See also sea-starwort n. at sea n. Compounds 6f.The plants in quot. ?a1450 are unidentified, but they may be species of Aster or Alchemilla.
