Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ochraceus , toxin n.
Etymology: < ochra- (in scientific Latin ochraceus, specific epithet of the fungus Aspergillus ochraceus, from which it was first isolated: see ochraceous adj.) + toxin n.
Microbiology.
Any of a series of mycotoxins which are produced by various moulds of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium and are derivatives of l-phenylalanine and a compound related to coumarin; esp. ochratoxin A, produced chiefly by A. ochraceus and having the empirical formula C20H18ClNO6.
