Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ὄχλος , species n.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὄχλος crowd, mob, multitude (see ochlocracy n.) + species n. (see quot. 1962).
Taxonomy.
A species which exhibits a complex pattern of variation among its members but is not separable into distinct subspecific groups.
