Etymology: < post-classical Latin obstetricat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of obstetricare to act as a midwife (Vulgate), to aid (a woman) in childbirth (Vetus Latina), to bring to birth (4th cent.) < classical Latin obstetrīc- , obstetrīx obstetrix n.
Now rare or disused.
1. intransitive. To act as a midwife; to assist at a birth. Chiefly figurative.
