Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French discrepance.
Etymology: < Middle French discrepance disagreement (late 15th cent.; French discrépance ) < classical Latin discrepantia difference < discrepant- , present participial stem of discrepāre discrepate v. + -ia -ia suffix1; compare -ance suffix. Compare Catalan discrepància (1399), Spanish discrepancia (1495 or earlier), Portuguese discrepȃncia (1537), Italian discrepanza (1350–75 as †descrepanza ). Compare earlier discrepant adj., discrepation n. N.E.D. (1896) also gives the pronunciation (di·skrĭpăns) /ˈdɪskrɪpəns/.
