Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin obstetricus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin obstetricus (1704 or earlier), alteration of classical Latin obstetrīcius (see obstetricious adj.). Compare French obstétrique adjective (1803). Compare earlier obstetrical adj., obstetricious adj.Association with words in -ic suffix has led to the formation of such derivatives as obstetrist n., etc.
Originally: of or relating to midwifery; of or relating to childbirth or birth. Later: spec. of or relating to obstetrics. Also in extended and figurative use.
