单词 néant
释义

néantn.

Brit. /ˈneɪɑːnt/, U.S. /ˈneɪɑnt/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French néant.
Etymology: < French néant non-being (1647 in Descartes; c1170 in Old French in sense ‘illusion’, late 12th cent. in Old French in sense ‘emptiness, godlessness’; earlier as adverb in sense ‘not at all’ (c1050), and as pronoun in negations in sense ‘nothing’ (late 10th cent.)), of uncertain origin. Compare Italian niente niente n.It is generally supposed that French néant , Italian niente and other corresponding Romance forms derive from an unattested post-classical Latin phrase. Suggested phrases include ne gentem < classical Latin ne- not (see ne adv.1) + gentem , accusative of gēns gens n., on the model of collocations such as nusquam gentium nowhere on earth, minimē gentium certainly not; nec entem < classical Latin nec not (shortened form of neque : see nequient adj.) + entem , accusative of ēns being (see ens n.); ne inde < classical Latin ne- + inde from there (see entrain v.1). Not fully naturalized in English.
Nothingness, emptiness. In modern usage (also with the French definite article prefixed) usually an allusion to the philosophical ideas of Jean-Paul Sartre, as expressed in L'Être et le Néant ( Being & Nothingness, 1943).
