Etymology: < scientific Latin Nycticebus (E. Geoffroy St-Hilaire 1812, in Ann. du Muséum d'Hist. Nat. 19 163) < nycti- nycti- comb. form + Cebus Cebus n.
Zoology.
A genus of primates of the family Lorisidae, comprising the slow lorises of South-East Asia; a primate of this genus.

1842 Penny Cycl. XXIII. 22/2 M. Geoffroy has since carried the principle of subdivision to a still greater extent by separating the slow-paced Lemur from the slender Loris..in order to form with it and some other doubtful species the genus Nycticebus.
1877 Cassell's Nat. Hist. I. 246 Grubs, Caterpillars, and the slower Beetles..are..solemnly munched up; the Nycticebus looking all the time, with its..protuberant eyes.
