Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Odontoglossum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Odontoglossum, genus name (C. S. Kunth in A. von Humboldt & A. Bonpland Nova Genera et Species Plantarum (1816) I. 350) < ancient Greek ὀδόντο- odonto- comb. form + γλῶσσα , γλῶττα tongue (see gloss n.1).
Botany.
A genus of chiefly epiphytic tropical American orchids, cultivated for their large and colourful flowers whose petals often have jagged edges; also ( odontoglossum), a plant or flower of this genus.
