Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French odomètre.
Etymology: < French odomètre (dated 1678 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)) < Hellenistic Greek ὁδόμετρον or ὁδόμετρος instrument for measuring distances by land or sea < ancient Greek ὁδός way (see -ode comb. form2) + μέτρον -meter comb. form2.
An instrument for measuring distance travelled by recording the number of revolutions of a wheel of known circumference; spec. (a) (in Surveying, etc.) a wheel attached to a handle, which may be rolled along the ground by a person on foot; = perambulator n. 2; (b) (now usually) a device which measures and displays the distance travelled by a vehicle, by means of a device attached to a wheel or bearing (cf. mileometer n.). Also: †= pedometer n. 1 (obsolete).
