Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by conversion. Or (ii) a borrowing from an African language. Etymon: nyam v.
Etymology: Either < nyam v., or independently via Jamaican creole nyam food < an African language, e.g. Wolof ɲam food or Fulfulde ɲama food. Compare Swahili nyama meat, Hausa nama flesh, meat, and similar words in many West African and Bantu languages; compare also Jamaican creole nyaams , nyams yam. Compare earlier yam n.3 at yam v. Derivatives (also yam n.1, ultimately of the same origin). Compare also yum int., ninyam n., and etymological notes at nuse n. and nyam v.
Caribbean (esp. Jamaican). Now rare.
As a count noun: a (hearty) meal; an item of food. As a mass noun: food. Cf. yam n.3 at yam v. Derivatives.

Origin: A borrowing from various Creole languages. Etymons: Jamaican Creole nyam; Krio nyam; Gullah nyam; Sranan nyan.
Etymology: < Jamaican Creole nyam to eat, and similar forms in other Caribbean and African creoles (e.g. Krio nyam, Gullah nyam, Sranan nyan), probably < a West African language (e.g. Wolof ɲam to eat or Fulfulde ɲama to eat), although perhaps simply imitative (compare yum int. and etymological note s.v. nuse n.).
