Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin obrogāt-, obrogāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin obrogāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of obrogāre partly to repeal a law by passing a new one < ob- ob- prefix + rogāre to ask, supplicate, propose a law, introduce a bill (see rogation n.). Compare earlier obrogation n. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·brŏgēit) /ˈɒbrəɡeɪt/.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To repeal (a law) by passing a new one. Also (more generally): to interrupt or contradict.
