Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: use n.
Etymology: Representing a colloquial pronunciation of use n., with intrusive n- (see note). Compare nuse v.The addition of n- is often explained as having been preserved from West African languages (many of which employ an n- prefix) by speakers of Gullah; compare nuse v., nyoung adj. In the collocation no nuse there may also be considerations of alliteration.
colloquial. U.S. regional (southern, esp. among African-Americans) and Caribbean (chiefly Barbados).
In speech and representations of speech: = use n. Chiefly in no nuse (cf. use n. 14a).
