Etymology: < French numismatique (1579 in Middle French) < post-classical Latin numismat- , numisma (4th cent.; variant (influenced by nummus coin: see nummi- comb. form) of classical Latin nomisma < ancient Greek νόμισμα nomisma n.) + French -ique -ic suffix. Compare Italian numismatico (1745), Spanish numismático (1817), Portuguese numismático (1835). Compare earlier numismatical adj.
