Origin: Probably a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic cnòdan.
Etymology: Probably < Scottish Gaelic cnòdan gurnard (compare Irish cnúdán, cruadán), further etymology uncertain.Compare also Scots regional (Argyllshire and Clydesdale) owdan , owden , in the same sense, probably showing metanalysis (see N n.), ultimately of the same origin.
Scottish (western) and Irish English (northern).
A small fish; esp. the grey gurnard, Eutrigla gurnardus.
