Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably a borrowing from Norn.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably < the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Icelandic nóri something small (17th cent.; in Old Icelandic only as a dwarf name), probably ultimately < an ablaut variant (lengthened grade) of the Germanic base of narrow adj.
Scottish (Orkney and Shetland).

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Norie.
Etymology: < the name of J. W. Norie (1772–1843), writer on navigation and founder of a nautical publishing house.
A copy of the Epitome of Navigation by J. W. Norie (originally published in 1805) or a successor publication, such as Norie's Nautical Tables (1936, etc.), regarded as a standard work of reference.
