Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin novālia.
Etymology: < classical Latin novālia (plural; also in singular) newly tilled land, fallow land, use as noun of neuter plural of novālis fallow < novus new adj. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare French novale newly tilled land (1248 in Old French as novales, plural). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (novēi·liă) /nəʊˈveɪlɪə/.
Obsolete. rare.
