Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin octo , -et suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin octo eight (see octo- comb. form) + -et suffix1. In sense 2 ultimately after Italian ottetto (1808 in a French linguistic context in the titles of musical compositions published in Prussia); compare in this sense German Oktett (in 19th cent. also as Octett ), French ottette (1874), octette (20th cent.), and also octuor n.
