Etymology: < nought adv. + withstanding, present participle of withstand v., probably after Anglo-Norman and Middle French non obstant and its etymon post-classical Latin non obstante (see non-obstant prep.). Compare notwithstanding prep., conj., adv., and n., notwithstand conj., prep., and adv., and also nought-againstanding prep. and adv., not-againstanding prep., not gainstanding at gainstand v. b, nongainstanding prep.In Middle English a parallel formation naghtwythstondyng , nawtwiþstondyng (see naught adv.) is also occasionally attested.
