Etymology: < nose n. + wise adj., perhaps after Dutch neuswijs know-all, precocious (of a child), (now only regional (West Flanders)) having a keen sense of smell, cunning, curious, nosey or Middle High German nasewīse having a keen sense of smell (German †nasenweis , naseweis know-all, precocious (of a child), cheeky, nosey). Compare nese-wise adj. at nese n. Compounds.
Obsolete (in later use Scottish and English regional (northern)).
