Etymology: < post-classical Latin numerarius, adjective (in numerarius canonicus , 13th cent.; 1503 in sense ‘numerous, copious’), earlier as noun, denoting an arithmetician (late 4th cent.), accountant, book-keeper (4th cent.) < classical Latin numerus number n. + -ārius -ary suffix1. With sense A. 2 compare Middle French, French numéraire (1561), Spanish numerario (1734), Portuguese numerário (1832), Italian numerario (1865). Compare earlier supernumerary adj. and n.
