Etymology: < noto- comb. form + ancient Greek βράγχια gills (see branchiae n.) + -ous suffix. R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857) gives a Latin form notobranchius ; compare also scientific Latin Notobranchius , variant of Nothobranchius (1868), genus name of a fish, and Notobranchia (1821: see notobranchiate adj.).

Zoology. Obsolete. rare.

Having dorsal branchiae or gills. Cf. notobranchiate adj.
