Etymology: < ancient Greek νότιος moist, damp ( < νότος south wind, south (see Notus n.) + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives) + -meter comb. form², after Dutch †notiometra, plural (see below). Compare French notiomètre (1691).The first (1718) edition of the text cited in the quot. and the Dutch (1717) text of which this is a translation both have the Latinate form notiometra (plural), in italics, apparently not attested elsewhere.
