单词 poodle
释义

poodlen.

Brit. /ˈpuːdl/, U.S. /ˈpud(ə)l/
Forms: 1800s poudel, 1800s pudel, 1800s– poodle.
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pudel.
Etymology: < German Pudel poodle (18th cent.; originally German regional (Low German)), shortened < German regional (Low German) Pudelhund poodle (17th cent.) < puddeln to splash about in water (see puddle v.) + hund hound n.1, so called on account of the poodle being a water dog (see water dog n.). Compare Dutch poedel (1804), Swedish pudel, Danish pudel, puddel (all < German). It is uncertain whether earlier currency of the German word is implied by Puddle (also Pudel ), reported as the name of a dog owned by Prince Rupert during the English Civil War (see A Dialogve or, rather a Parley betweene Prince Ruperts Dogge whose name is Pvddle, and Tobies Dog whose name is Pepper (1643)), although the name of the prince's dog seems in fact to have been Boye . With the derogatory figurative use in sense 1b compare similar use slightly earlier in poodle-faker n.
1.
