Etymology: < non- prefix + violence n. In use by M. K. Ghandi (see quot. 1920) after Sanskrit ahiṃsā ahimsa n.; Ghandi's use of the term considerably influenced later use.
Avoidance of the use of violence, esp. as a principle.
