Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: non- prefix, U n.1
Etymology: < non- prefix + U n.1 (compare sense Initialisms 1b); apparently coined by Alan Ross (see quots. 19541, 19542 at sense A.) and subsequently popularized by Nancy Mitford (see quot. 1955 at sense A.).

Not upper-class; (esp. of linguistic usage or social behaviour) not characteristic of the upper social classes. Also (in extended use): not acceptable to the speaker or writer (socially or culturally).
