Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek ϕυτόν , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕυτόν plant (see phyto- comb. form) + -in suffix1, after German Phytin (S. Posternak 1904, in Schweiz. Wochenschr. f. Chem. u. Pharm. 42 405).
Biochemistry.
An insoluble salt of phytic acid with calcium and magnesium, found in plant tissues, esp. cereals. Also more generally: the acid itself. Also ( Phytin, † Phytine): a pharmaceutical preparation containing this substance, formerly used as a tonic.

1969 N. W. Pirie Food Resources vii. 164 The old-fashioned method of making porridge..destroys phytin which would otherwise make the calcium in the food less easy to absorb.
