Etymology: < German Nitron (P. Pfeiffer 1916, in Ann. de Chemie 411 83) < nitro- nitro- comb. form + -on -one suffix, after Keton ketone n.The name nitrone had earlier been suggested by J. Dickson ( Ess. Chem. Nomencl. (1796) 141) as a name for the ‘radical principle’ of nitrogen (in effect, the element nitrogen), by analogy with French carbone carbon n.

Any of a class of organic compounds having a dipolar molecule in which an oxygen atom is bonded to the nitrogen atom of a Schiff base (general formula RR′C=N⁺(R″)—O⁻, where R, R′, R″ represent alkyl or other organic groups), some of which are used experimentally to react with and stabilize free radicals.
