Etymology: Ultimately < classical Latin nitrāria a place where nitrum is extracted (Pliny) < nitrum nitre n. + -āria -ary suffix¹. Compare French nitrière a place where nitre (saltpetre) is extracted (1562 in Middle French in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny), Italian nitreria natural deposit of potassium nitrate (saltpetre), organic matter mixed with wood or peat and left to decay in order to produce saltpetre (1550), Spanish nitrería place where nitre is refined and gathered (1599), Portuguese nitreira place where nitre is formed (1813).The Latin word refers primarily to natural soda or nitre beds, not to man-made nitre beds.

An artificial bed of decaying organic matter mixed with lime or other alkaline substances, from which nitre (saltpetre) was formerly obtained.
