Etymology: < classical Latin Neptūnus Neptune, the god of the sea; further etymology uncertain. Compare Middle French Neptune (16th cent. denoting the sea, 1848 denoting the planet).

(The name of) the planet of the solar system eighth in order of average distance from the sun.Neptune was first observed by Johann Galle at the Berlin Observatory in 1846, close to a position calculated (from the motion of Uranus) by the French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier (and independently by the British mathematician John Couch Adams). It is the fourth largest planet in the solar system in terms of size (the third largest in terms of mass), and is a gas giant with at least eight satellites and a faint ring system. Lying beyond the orbit of Uranus, Neptune is invisible to the naked eye.
