Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish nogal.
Etymology: < Spanish nogal walnut, walnut tree (1083), either < post-classical Latin nucalis nucal adj. or < post-classical Latin nucarius walnut tree (see noker-tree n.). Compare Portuguese nogal (1048, 1030 as nugar).
U.S.
Any of several walnut trees of the south-western U.S., Mexico, and the West Indies, esp. Juglans microcarpa and J. major. Also (occasionally): a hickory or pecan tree.

Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans nogal.
Etymology: < Afrikaans nogal fairly, rather, quite < nog still, yet ( < Dutch nog (Middle Dutch noch ), cognate with Old Frisian noch , Old Saxon noh (Middle Low German noch , nok ), Old High German noh (Middle High German, German noch ), Gothic nauh < the Germanic base of now adv. + the suffix found in though adv., conj., and n.) + al all pron. and n. II.
South African colloquial.
What is more; into the bargain; moreover, besides.Used esp. at the end of a sentence or clause to indicate that the information just given is important or noteworthy (unlike its use in Afrikaans where it is a premodifier to an adjective).
