Etymology: < crypto- comb. form + -zoon comb. form, after scientific Latin Cryptozoön, genus name (see quot. 1883). Compare cryptozoa n.Scientific Latin Cryptozoon had earlier been proposed as the name of a genus of beetles (L. W. Schaufuss 1882, in Ann. de la Soc. Entomol. de France 2 47).
Geology.
A supposed reef-forming fossil of Cambrian or Precambrian age having a laminated, discoid structure and subsequently shown to be the remains of colonies of cyanobacteria (stromatolites). Also (in form Cryptozoon) as a genus name.
